Growing Power – Milwaukee
Growing Power is a national nonprofit organization and land trust supporting people from diverse backgrounds and the environments in which they live, by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food for people in all communities. Growing Power implements this mission by providing hands-on training, on-the-ground demonstration, outreach and technical assistance through the development of Community Food Systems that help people grow, process, market, and distribute food in a sustainable manner.
Leket Israel
Leket Israel is Israel’s national food bank and major food rescue organization. With the support of 50,000 volunteers, Leket provides 180 agencies working with the needy with other 25 million lbs of healthy food a year rescued from destruction from 1,000 food producers. Leket educates its nonprofit partners to the importance of food safety and balanced nutrition, employs 32 previously exploited women in agricultural food rescue and serves all Israel’s needy regardless of religion or ethnic background.
Community Foodbank of New Jersey
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey fights hunger and poverty in New Jersey by distributing 40 million pounds of food and groceries annually through its own programs and through its 1,100 member charities, including soup kitchens, food pantries, and homeless shelters. As part of the FoodBank’s goal of ensuring that the food we provide is highly nutritional, the FoodBank founded the Fresh Produce Initiative in 2012. This initiative, a partnership between the FoodBank and the non-profit America’s Grow-A-Row in Pittstown, N.J., is expected to provide 1 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables for distribution by the FoodBank in 2014. As part of this partnership, America’s Grow-A-Row gives professionally developed, age-appropriate nutrition-education lessons, including a field trip to the farm, for approximately 500 children from the FoodBank’s Kids Café program annually.
Meals on Wheels of Trenton & Ewing
Meals on Wheels of Trenton/Ewing, Inc. (MOWTE) is a non-profit 501(c) 3 organization founded in 1973 to address the serious issue of senior malnutrition in the Trenton community. From the beginning, Meals on Wheels of Trenton/Ewing has been committed to serving the homebound senior and disabled, those who cannot cook or shop for themselves. The homebound know no racial, sexual, economic nor even age barrier. In 2006, the Subsidized Meal Program (SMP) was created to serve low-income seniors and other homebound adults despite their inability to pay. Today, the SMP represents 60% of Meals on Wheels clients. There is no waiting list for the SMP, and we turn no one away. With three full time employees, one part time courier and over 200 volunteers, Meals on Wheels of Trenton/Ewing, Inc. provided over 44,100 meals to over 375 clients in 2013.
